Advanced Placement

What is Advanced Placement?

Advanced Placement (AP) courses at York Memorial are first year university courses that  our students can take in grades 11 and 12. A major component of these courses include standardized AP exams that are written in May. If students do well enough on these exams they are granted first year university credits that are recognized at post-secondary institutions around the world - all while still in high school! York Memorial is a provincial leader in the number of AP courses we offer (13 AP courses) and is also a provincial leader in the number of students writing AP exams (close to 300 exams in May 2020).

Who can take AP?

All students in grades 10, 11 and 12 are welcome to contact York Memorial’s Guidance department if they are interested in taking AP courses as part of their academic pathway.  AP courses often come with a common misconception - that they are only available to high achieving students. The reality is that any student can enroll in an AP course. Since AP is geared towards preparing students for college and university, all students interested in attending a college or university are highly encouraged to take one or more AP course(s).
